Newborn Minimalist Wardrobe

Wednesday, December 21, 2016

Hey ya'll. I just wanted to make a real quick video showing Luna's capsule wardrobe. Super simple, gender neutral and just the basics. I have a few pieces that were in no way essential, just cute, that I got her.

A few tips to not go crazy buying newborn clothes

  • Buy older size clothing. So this doesn't prevent you from buying more clothes, but by buying clothes for when they are a bit older it allows them to wear them more than once. When I was pregnant there was no way I wouldn't shop for clothes (new or second hand, I just wanted to get her things lol). What I did was look for clothes that were bigger in size, 6 months on up.
  • Splurge on only a FEW clothing items when they are newborn. Again they grow out of all of their newborn clothes so fast, you don't wanna break the bank on something that they might not even get a chance to wear.
  • You DON'T have to buy all of their clothes at once. This may come as a surprise, but it is not the end of the world if you don't have every single possible thing before they are born. It is alllll gonna be okay. What ever you might be missing you can just pick up once they are here.
  • Random tip : newborn sizes are just like adult sizes, ALL DIFFERENT by brand. So sure you might have 5 different newborn onsies and they will all be different sizes. Lol.

Herbs + Oils Bath

Kinda going a little crazy over Herbs + Oils Bath shop on Etsy. I absolutely love finding shops that hit every single mark in what I'm looking for:

Vegan/Cruelty free/Natural/Minimal/US made/Ecofriendly/Effective

I mean could I ask for more! I have so many of their items favorited for future purchasing. I truly cannot get over the love and dedication that they put into every product. I got my hands on theirBalance Face Oil and could not be happier. I am a freak for face oils and I tell everyone who is intimidated by it (for fear of getting greasy face) that they just need to find an oil that works for them. This one is perfect for mine. (I have normal/combination skin) I apply it once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I typically wear none to very minimal makeup on a daily basis so it doesn't affect it. One of the factors that people fear the most of face oils in the tendency for them to stay on the top layer of the skin. With my Balance Face Oil it is absorbed into my skin within a minute. It has left my skin looking, feeling, and actually being healthier. It's sad but I actually cannot wait to run out so that I can try everything that they have to offer! Haha.

Here are a few words from the shop:

Documentary || Live and Let Live

Tuesday, September 13, 2016
Live and Let Live. Simple enough right? I mean, isn' that what we would all want. To live in a peaceful world where we don't harm one another. What we have all been taught to do. Because why on earth would we want to harm others? That is exactly what the documentary Live and Let Live is all about. This incredible film speaks about the relationship that we have created with animals around us. How we have forgotten the fact that these creatures are sentient beings and portray and treat them as products. By disconnecting ourselves from the reality we do not question our actions. We go along day by day not questioning our life choices and the consequences that those choices have. I was no different. I never thought twice about what I was doing. Not realizing that I had blood on my hands, for every damn meal. I hear people comment all the time about how "over dramatic" vegans are. How is it "over dramatic" to stand up for innocent beings who are being slaughtered every single day? We must all step up and speak out in any way we can. We must be the voice for the voiceless.

Must watch documentary. Available on Netflix.

The Tiny Collection

Wednesday, August 10, 2016

Fellin tropical ya'll. So in fact I cannot live year around thinking that it is fall, especially when it is 102 degrees outside. (I'll figure out a way to do this successfully and let you know) I decided to get my hands on some killer summery candles. That's when The Tiny Collection caught my eye. It is a vegan/eco-conscious shop making bomb candles! Their smell combinations is what really got to me. Reading some of these made me imagine myself in paradise.

I got my hands on the coconut lime and pineapple sage scent. I found it extra awesome because the lotion and body spray that I use have a coconut lime scent so now my office smells like me! Bahah. And boy do these little suckers pack a punch. In just a few minutes the smell spread around and I was basically at the beach.

Below are some words from the lady behind the magic, Sydney- who is the owner of The Tiny Collection. Happy Wednesday ya'll!

My name is Sydney and I am the owner of The Tiny Collection. I opened my shop in 2013 because of my love for all things natural (plus, I'm sort of a candle hoarder). I was so excited when this idea hit me! I could combine the two things I loved... earth-conscious products and candles! I swear, there really was a light bulb that went off in my head. So now we are here... My shop is two years old and I am still in love with what I do. Enough about me, keep reading below to find more info on my shop!

SHARING THE LOVE
Each candle is hand poured from a small batch filled with a lot of love. It is definitely something special to create natural, high quality candles for my customers. I work very hard to ensure my customers receive a candle that not only smells delicious but a candle they fall in love with as soon as they open the package. Every single step in our candle making process is filled with love. A lovely customer once told me that she was so grateful to have finally found a natural candle that not only smells amazing but burned beautifully as well. She has continued to support us throughout our journey.

ECO + VEGAN FRIENDLY
Let's make the world a better place. By choosing our candles you are choosing a candle that's not only safe for you but it is safe for the environment. Our candles are crafted form the most natural soy wax made from soy beans grown here in the US. Our candles are infused with a natural fragrance blend that includes pure essential oils. We refuse to use any animal products or byproducts. We will never use any ingredient that has been tested on animals. We take pride in using earth friendly and sustainable supplies. Whether it's supplies directly used in our candles or the boxes we use to ship, all of our supplies is either biodegradable, or recyclable. We want to thank you for being a part in reducing our carbon footprint. This Earth is a beautiful place and we should do our very best to keep it that way. Thanks for supporting an earth friendly, small business.

GIVING BACK
Burn a candle that gives back. Growing up, I have always had a dog. I love them so much because they are always there for you no matter what! I am a proud dog mom of three beautiful fur babies. It breaks my heart knowing some dogs and cats have yet to find their forever home. This is why I decided to donate a portion of each candle to various animal shelters. I am so grateful for all of my customers because without them we could not touch the loves of so many amazing animals in need. Thank you all for supporting not only my passion but for providing the animals with shelter, food, and a warm bed.

A to Z Candles

Wednesday, July 27, 2016

Happy Wednesday! Hope everyone's week is going great. I got the fantastic chance to interview the lovely Amanda from A to Z Candles. Not only does she have an awesome vegan shop but is also pretty damn awesome herself. I cannot say this enough but we all need to support these amazing vegan centered shops. We the consumer are able to bring so much change to the system by using our dollar power for good.

I even got my hands on her Man Cave candle! Which happens to be my favorite smell. I also got an incredible melt. My whole house smells absolutely fantastic. Well without further or due. Here is my interview with A to Z Candles.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi! My name is Amanda and I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. I spend most days relaxing and spending time with my husband, daughter, and my dog, Max. I enjoy going to concerts, eating lots of vegan food, and of course, making candles!

I wish we had computer smelly sense because your shop sounds divine! How did you get into candle making?
I have been a fan of home fragrance for years. But the products I was buying began to give me headaches and irritated my asthma.  After realizing the ingredients in most candles and melts, I decided to move to soy wax from paraffin. I wanted more fragrance choices with the soy, so I decided I wanted to make them myself! I started with candles, then added melts. I now also carry car air freshener (sachets) and reed diffuser kits as well. To make sure I have something for any budget, my candles come in five different sizes.

I love love love that your products are vegan and cruelty free! How did you fall into creating vegan products?
I've been vegan since September 2014, so naturally I wanted to start a vegan friendly business. I did extensive research on the wax and fragrances I use to make sure nothing was animal tested or had any trace of animal byproducts. Once I knew my supplies were vegan, it was game on!  My wax is free of genetically modified materials, pesticides, and herbicides.  My fragrance oils are made with premium ingredients without harmful chemicals. Some of my fragrance oils even have essential oils mixed into them. My wicks are 100% cotton.

What are some future plans for your shop?
My plan is to keep growing!  Adding new fragrances, and possibly new products. I'm always finding something to change or to improve on.  I hope to be able to open my own website outside of Etsy in the next year as well.

SCHMIDT'S DEODORANT

Friday, July 22, 2016

Smell good stuff! Not gonna lie ya'll, after the past few months I feel like I am kinda obsessed with deodorants. Haha. I mean how can I not be when there are killer brands like Schmidt's Deodorant out there?!

Schmidt's Deodorants is a company on a mission, to change the status quo on deodorants. By creating effective, cruelty free, vegan, non toxic deodorants why would anyone go for anything less? Founder Jame Schmidt got started with this deodorant when she was pregnant with her son. She was always very interested in more natural body care and new the incredible benefits that they had as opposed to their conventional counterparts. She then began to formulate her own deodorants being that so many natural deodorants on the market were indeed natural, but not so effective. After tons of hard work she finally came up with a formula that not only was natural and great for you but also left you feeling fresh all day long.

I got to test out the tub and stick versions and I have to say I love them both. Of course the stick is something we are all more familiar with so it seems more practical but I love the idea of the glass tub, which is what I will probably stick with. The smells are delightful but not overpowering. And most important they work! Natural deodorants get a bad rep because there are so many natural deodorants out there that just don't work. Schmidt's has figured out a way to make it natural and super effective.

Schmidt's also offers a recycling club!! Yes! You heard me right. This is exactly the kind of mindset that we need from brands. When you save five jars of the deodorant they will send you a jar for free. They will even pay for the shipping. By creating incentives for people to be more zero waste, we are able to realize that things shouldn't be as disposable as they are now. Big props to them for thinking of an awesome way to lower their environmental impact!

Ellison Organics Nail Laquer

Tuesday, July 19, 2016
Found the perfect polish ya'll.  Ellison Organics carries the most amazing polishes ever.I crave a matte black polish year around and I found one that comes right out of the bottle! To get my nails matte I would usually gave a top coat that I would apply over my polish and it was always such a mess because of how thick is usually comes out. Has anyone else had that problem? Well I don't have to worry about that anymore. This polish is a natural alternative to conventional polish but also has a beautiful formula and spectacular finish.

One of my pet peeves about painting my nails is when the formula of the polish is off. If it is too thick it is a damn mess and if it's too runny it takes days to get the correct opaqueness. This polish gave me the perfect coverage with two coats so no need to wait a million years for it to dry, which is another issue with me. I am so impatient that I usually mess my nails up on the spot. Haha.

Carleigh is the beautiful mind behind Ellison's Organics created her shop with the mind set that she didn't want crazy ingredients in her products. She wanted to create natural, non toxic products that she would be proud to share.

To find all of Ellison's Organics incredible products check out the shop here.
Hope ya'll are having a great Tuesday!

Wild Fawn Jewelry

Tuesday, July 12, 2016
While perusing throughout Etsy I stumbled upon Wild Fawn Jewellry. I am a huge fan of minimalism the lifestyle but also of the ascetic. This beautiful shop creates some spectacular pieces that I had to share them, not to mention that the shop strives to be as eco friendly as possible.

The beautiful pair that I got was the hammered earband. They are super comfortable in the ears and are able to be dressed up or down. Being that I don't own an abundant amount of jewelry I like to be able to have versatility with the pieces that I do own. I had also never really considered an eco side when it comes to jewelry, then I realized the terrible ecological effects that go on with conventional jewelry making. I am very glad to know that there are shops out there that strive to make environmentally conscious jewelry. And I honestly cannot get over how beautiful these pieces are and cannot wait to get my hands on a necklace. Just an over all amazing shop.

Here are some more of Wild Fawn Jewllery's work. Check out the shop here for more beautiful pieces.

And I will leave you with a few words from the shop.

Wild Fawn is a sanctuary for me; being based in London means that after the hustle and bustle of the day, I love to unwind and relax by creating beautiful pieces with beautiful materials. My favourite part of being a silversmith is the feeling when I sit down to make a piece of jewellery that's been developing and evolving in my mind - there's something very exciting about not knowing quite how an idea will turn out.

I strive to make my jewellery as eco-friendly as possible and is handmade using eco friendly methods. These include using recycled sterling silver and chemical-free alternatives in the manufacturing process wherever possible. Before I made sterling silver jewellery, I had no idea about the detrimental impacts that mining for silver has on the environment and those living around mines which is why I use ecosilver as much as possible in my work. Ecosilver is 100% recycled sterling silver, which means that there hasn't been any negative environmental impact to extract it from the Earth.

Fly Vegan Seasoning

Thursday, June 30, 2016
I am so excited to talk about Fly Vegan Seasoning! It is an awesome seasoning mix that taste BOMB! Being from the south we all think (know) that our food is the best around and we attribute that to our killer seasonings.

But far more than just being an awesome seasoning mix Fly Vegan has an awesome message. Here is a little excerpt from their page:

"I was raised in the South and I was't born vegan. I stepped into the vegan lifestyle three years ago on a quest to lose weight and get healthy. I had no idea how eye opening and awakening becoming vegan would be. I had no idea how good I would feel knowing I'm a "Super Hero" saving the world one animal at a time. Finding food had its challenges thought I cooked well as a meat eater.
I was totally different with my new plant based diet. I had to learn how to cook all over again. So i set out on a quest for flavor. My husband who adopted the lifestyle also just happens to be a New Orleans native. Before becoming vegan he was a great cook also. We all know creole equals flavor so here's what we did. He have me his original family recipes and I figured out how to make them plant based deliciousness. BY the time I was done I knew we were on to something. and we had to share it with the world. I am here to prove you can eat and cook a plant based diet and never miss the flavor of meat or dairy ever again."

I drool over the Fly Vegan's youtube videos, like no joke. Seeing foods that grew up on and loved recreated in a cruelty free way makes me jump with joy. I am so thrilled to have found such an awesome company with real heart. Hope you guys enjoy their videos as much as I do. Find them here. And their shop here.

Documentary || The Beginning of Life

Monday, June 20, 2016
The Beginning of Life is an awesome documentary showing that we can really positively or negatively affect the lives of our young ones by how we take them about life. It is so empowering and terrifying at the same time. Many parents take the role of parenting lightly but in reality it is an incredible responsibility. You are showing your children every aspect of life whether or not you see it to be intentional. We must create positive and blooming environment so that are children are able to explore and express themselves. Children with gravitate to learning, to compassion, to kindness. We just need to be there to guide them. Great documentary.

Look at it! Look how awesome this shirt is! By far my new favorite shirt. I can't even deal.EnduDesigns has so many awesome tees to choose from. This one reminds me so much of Mowgli how could I go wrong. Haha. EnduDesigns has a great variety of running, cycling and vegan shirts. I know what I'm getting Zac for father's day. Tehehe. (Don't tell him)

When I first became vegan I thought that wearing vegan shirts was just too far. I thought to myself "I don't need everyone to know I am vegan. I know that I am not harming any animals." Later I realized the power of a shirt. When Zac started wearing his vegan shirt flocks of people would go up to him and ask him either what does it mean, what do you eat, how do you do it, ect. I am not saying you have to wear a vegan shirt every single day or your not a good animal activist, but wearing them opens up a conversation that might other wise not been started. I love wearing my vegan shirts and answering questions when they come up. You never know who you might spark to live a more compassionate life just by the shirt on your back.

Check out EnduDesigns here to find some killer vegan shirt!

Breathe Resist

Tuesday, May 24, 2016
A few says ago I had the utmost pleasure of interviewing Jess Five the incredible artist from Breathe. Resist. I was just strolling through Etsy when I came about this shop. It is a punk patch shop that promotes social justice. I mean it doesn't get much better than that. I as so interested in her shop that buying a patch as not enough. So I reached out and asked her a few questions.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Jess Five and I am the artist for Breathe. Resist. - breatheresist.com - and I am an one-person band called Morningstar Rising.  I like cats and vegan chocolate chips. My personal motto is, "Change yourself, change the world."

It is so incredible that you have a shop that promotes veganism. When did you become a vegan?

Thanks!  My story starts when I had an epiphany about 10 years ago that I didn't want to be another creature's food.  So, I extended that courtesy to all sentient beings as they probably didn't want to be my food either.  With that insight, I went vegetarian.  After two or so years of being vegetarian, I realized that it wasn't enough as animals were still being abused. I quickly went vegan as I wanted no part in their suffering.  That being said, I've never considered being a vegan an act of activism.  Rather, it is an act of standing in solidarity to end all forms of oppression.  For example, someone who goes to a feminist event doesn't go home and start making homophobic remarks.  Even if it isn't their battle, they are still an ally to that cause.  So, why is it acceptable for people to go to a human rights event and then go home and take part in animal exploitation?  There is no difference between the two scenarios yet the latter is socially acceptable.  I hope through outreach, that that situation will change and more people will be an ally to stop the torture of animals.

I really enjoy that you bring up other very important social issues within the patches you create. How did you involve yourself in creating patches that send out such critical messages?
I started making patches while I was attending art school in New York City.  While at school, I fell in love with the DIY punk scene in the lower east side at Abc No Rio and was very involved with helping to put on shows and cooking with Food Not Bombs.  I somehow found out there was going to be an anarchist book fair and at that time I was taking a silkscreening (silkscreens don't use silk anymore) class.  I signed up to vend the book fair and the rest is history.

What are some future plans for your shop?

I have big plans for the shop in the future.  Most notably, I will start making buttons in the upcoming month or two.  Plus, I have some real rad new patch designs in the works.  On the music side, I am hoping to release my first full length LP online for free in the fall.  I also have a few tricks up my sleeves so please "like" the shop at facebook.com/breatheresist or follow me on Instagram: @breatheresist to stay updated.

In closing, I'd liked to thank Why Choose Vegan for taking an interest in my art and shop.  It is blogs like this and readers like you that are the reason Breathe. Resist. exists as everything I make - I make for you.  Your support is everything.  Thank you.

I got these two patches! I will have the left one and Zac will have the right one, we are so excited to put these on our backpacks!

I am so glad that there are wonderful artist out there like Jess who can spread amazing messages through their passion.
